I have a piece of bad news for you. Nobody reads your recommendations on books. Because the first person who would have, as me, read prof. Levin's articles about emergence, for example, asked the same question: How can you keep the "system layer" concept at the center of your systems thinking discipline after everything Levin says and his very convincing examples? Because Levin talks about holarchies in a completely another way. The functional and constructional decompositions do not coincide with the holarchy for one simple reason. He states that the function in biological systems emerges all the way from the atomic level up to organisms. Any boundary for some particular function you draw is for the purpose of some viewpoint only. You change your viewpoint and can no longer keep the functional decomposition because the function changes when the boundaries shift. And that destroys all the foundations of 42010, isn't it?
